flag – finished!

You may remember that I wrote about a recent commission for a friend of mine who is travelling to the London Olympics in their newly-restored 1960s VW camper van.

As you can see, I have been hard at work since my last post.

After long deliberation (plain or fancy? dark or pale?) I chose flowery fabrics for the lettering and set to work on the appliqué message.

After a printer breakdown (aargh!) and subsequent emergency email to my partner to print out the templates at work, letters were cut from each fabric, drawing around the paper templates as a guide.

The fabric letters were backed with bond-a-web and then white cotton, to make them stand out against the patchwork flag backing. Then they were ironed and sewn into position.

The finished patchwork / appliqué flag is lined with heavy calico, trimmed with home-made binding and finished with a couple of hanging loops.

It goes to its new owner on Saturday.

I hope she likes it.

If you would like a special wallhanging, cushion or other item appliqued with a design of your choice, just get in touch via my Commissions page.

  1. I LOVE this! Thanks so much for showing how you did the lettering, I’m still getting over years of fear of sewing machines and I tend to think things like that are too fiddly for me, but it doesn’t actually look that hard now I can see how it’s done – time consuming, yes – but not horrendously complex. The results are stunning – well done you! x

    • Thanks for the lovely comment Rachel! My friend was very pleased with it. I think I’m going to try some more appliqué items now that I’ve properly got the hang of it.
The nice thing is you can use any font, or any shape (as long as your prepared to deal with the intricacy!) so it makes items completely personalised and unique.
