pastel pretties

I have been working on more stars – this time in pastel colours.

They are made from vintage sheet fabrics.

I do like the idea of them adorning a white tree like this one:

What do you think?

I also have lots more snippings as a result, so I’ll probably make more pinwheels too – bonus!

daisy, daisy

It was very grey again here yesterday.

I found it hard to get much sewing done, what with packaging up a load of bits and bobs sold on eBay after a clear out (hoping to raise cash for fabric purchases!) and trying to get on top of general household grubbiness following half term.

But I did have an unexpected windfall at the charity shop – five little cushion pads.

They prompted me to dig through the too-small-for-a-regular-sized-cushion fabric bits I have, to see if any would do.

This daisy design did.

It looks quite sweet with its bigger sister sunny.

Though I keep forgetting to add my nice labels!

I had to unpick a bit of the seam to slot one in afterwards.

Never mind, nobody will ever know ;)

a change is as good as a rest

I have been working furiously on my wonky stars quilt this week. Today I have been piecing the back.

It is all sharp contrasts; blues, greens and yellows against crisp white.

Much as I like it, I find that my eyes grow tired looking at the same thing all the time. Inspiration becomes dulled.

I had a rummage and found a few vintage sheet scraps left in a bag that seemed to make a pretty combination.

I combined them with a piece of soft cream material, given to me ages ago by my sewing tutor.

The softer, creamy palette and faded sheet scraps make a nice change from all that white.

Very restful on the eye.

And when it is finished and filled with a cushion pad, it will be nice and restful on a chair, too!

make do and mend

This is one of my favourite summer frocks.

An Oxfam buy from years ago, it is cool, comfortable and has seen me through a good few holidays.

I love the fabric. It reminds me of vintage sheets.

But horror!

On removing it from the wardrobe to wash for its annual outing – well, I can’t wear it smelling “cupboardy” – I noticed a rip!

Its at the neck, so I suppose I could just pin it with a brooch, but it might get worse.

Time for a spot of frock renovation.

Just the job for a bit of hand sewing on the sofa this evening.

Dreaming of hot days to come.

friday fabrics

I love it when a fabric order arrives.

If it takes a while, I have sometimes forgotten exactly what is going to be inside.

Its like getting a Christmas stocking.

Some new additions to my fabric stash arrived this week.

When I made the order, I was thinking bunting.

However, the washout that is this English summer has, apparently, dealt a bit of a blow to bunting sales.

Or perhaps everyone is just bunted-out after the Jubilee.

So instead, there is a little bluebird Tweetie Pie cushion already under construction using the blue fabric below.

I figured that a bluebird of happiness is just what I need right now.

And crucially, it is not weather-dependent.

a post about pastels

When I was about seventeen I used to own a pair of pastel pink mary-jane button pumps and a palest blue leather satchel. I loved them. But I moved on, as you do, and I subsequently went off pastel colours for a very, very, long time. Too wishy-washy. Wan.

Sugared-almond shades now seem to be having another moment. There they are, peeking out of magazines. Budding fashion editors on Polyvore seem to love them. And there also appears to be a lot of excitement about pastel-coloured nail polish, although as a nail-biter of many years standing, nail polish isn’t something I could ever get excited about.

I don’t really see myself decked out in any all-pastel outfits any time soon either. I would probably look like a mother of the bride who has wandered off from a wedding. I’m also getting an unpleasant mental picture of big hats, the sort with wafty feathers, at Ascot.

A pale coloured T shirt or two might be ok during the summer though.

But I am most definitely plumping for a bit of pastel in interiors. Not too much, just a bit, here and there, like sprinkles on ice cream.

And I can also see myself undertaking a pastel patchwork project. That is, if I can get my hands on enough of those pretty vintage sheets.

So, how do you feel about pastels? Pallid or pretty?
